As the final evolution of the manually-wound Daytona line, the reference 6263 is widely regarded as the quintessential and most iconic model in the Cosmograph collection. It showcases all the features that made the Daytona a design masterpiece: a bezel with a black insert featuring a tachymeter scale, screw-down pushers, and the unmistakable Rolex Oyster case. The present example, dating from 1973, is a rare variant featuring an elegant and attractive "Sigma" dial. The "T Swiss T" signature at 6 o'clock is flanked by the Greek Sigma symbol, indicating that the markers and hands are made of white gold. Launched in 1971, the reference 6265 continued the tradition of the classic metal tachymeter bezel seen in earlier models like the 6239. However, it introduced several improvements, including a waterproof ‘Oyster’ case, screw-down waterproof pushers, and crown, replacing the earlier pump chronograph pushers of models like the 6239 and 6241. Inside, the 6265 houses the renowned caliber Valjoux 727, an upgrade from the caliber 722-1 found in some previous models. To enhance accuracy, Rolex replaced the balance, increasing the vibration rate from 18,000 to 21,000. This movement, distinguished by the "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" marking on the dial, celebrated the advancements made with the improved 727 Caliber. However, in 1988, Rolex replaced this movement with the automatic ‘Zenith’ chronograph caliber 4030. Among vintage Rolex Daytona watches, the ref. 6265 holds a special place for collectors. Launched in 1971, the reference 6265 continued the tradition of the classic metal tachymeter bezel seen in earlier models like the 6239. However, it introduced several improvements, including a waterproof ‘Oyster’ case, screw-down waterproof pushers, and crown, replacing the earlier pump chronograph pushers of models like the 6239 and 6241. Inside, the 6265 houses the renowned caliber Valjoux 727, an upgrade from the caliber 722-1 found in some previous models. To enhance accuracy, Rolex replaced the balance, increasing the vibration rate from 18,000 to 21,000. This movement, distinguished by the "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" marking on the dial, celebrated the advancements made with the improved 727 Caliber. Due to its brief production period, the 6262 is rarely seen on the market. Their durability, accuracy, and readability were paramount, and as such, they were overwhelmingly constructed of stainless steel. However, over the years, some discerning clients chose their sports watches in precious metals, primarily 18k yellow gold, but also in some instances, and primarily for the US market, in 14K gold. (This was a practical solution to the tax implications of importing 18k into the USA). Produced by Rolex only between 1965 and 1969, the Ref 6241 has become one of the most iconic versions of the Daytona. This was the watch that introduced the signature black (acrylic) bezel to the Daytona model, a striking part of the models design that lives on today in the current Rolex catalog with the black ceramic bezel Ref 116500 Daytona. The Ref 6241 was offered with a handful of dial configurations. It is thought that there were in the region of 3000 examples of the 6241 made in total across all metal types and configurations. In terms of rarity however, the current watch, with a 14k yellow gold case, black grené ‘Nero Dial’ with champagne-colored subsidiary registers, and distinctive oversized ‘Jumbo Daytona Logo’, is one of the rarest of all the Daytona dials ever produced. Only a handful of such examples have been offered to the market over the preceding decades, far fewer than its ‘Paul Newman’ (JPS) dialed brothers. This example has never been offered to the market before and is presented in excellent condition. The case, with a correct early 1.5m serial number, is in superb condition and retains its original full proportions with hallmarks clearly visible under the lugs and retaining its original 14k 6241 case back. It should also be noted that the movement, a Valjoux 722, has the ROW designation stamped to the bridge, indicating that the original destination of the watch was the North American market. This watch has been retained by the same family since being purchased by the wife for the husband to commemorate the beginning of two concurrent big new adventures in their life - the launch of a new business and the coming arrival of a child. The classic gold Rolex Daytona has always been a visible symbol of success and taste, and this watch was worn throughout its owner’s life of business, car racing, sailing, and much more until his passing in the late 90s. The watch was passed from father to wife and subsequently to son on the event of his wedding in 2010, where it has enjoyed only occasional use since. This is truly a connoisseur's Daytona. More subtle and understated than a Paul Newman example and made in smaller numbers. This represents a rare opportunity to acquire such a rare and desirable example from an important private collection being offered for sale publicly for the very first time.

Introduced in 1969, the reference retained the classic stainless steel tachymeter bezel originally seen on the references 6239 and 6262, and is enhanced with screw-down waterproof pushers and crown as opposed to the earlier pump chronograph pushers found on the reference 6239. Inside, the 6265 is fitted with the famous caliber Valjoux 727, which was an evolution from the caliber 722-1 present on some 6239, 6241 and 6240. To further enhance its performance, Rolex replaced the balance to increase the precision by increasing vibrations from 18,000 to 21,000. This movement was eventually replaced by the automatic ‘Zenith’ chronograph caliber 4030 in 1988. The current example, from circa 1978 has recently received a full restoration at the hands of Rolex’s master watchmakers at the Rolex Restoration Atelier in Geneva. In 1967 he won a Bronze Medal at the USSR Championship and was later given the title of Champion of the Soviet Union following an ascent of Chatyn (4,368m) in the Caucus mountains in 1970. Offered by the Makauskas family, who confirmed the origins of the watch, the present watch with a case dating to 1971 was presumably one of the few Rolex Daytonas to adorn a wrist on the eastern side of the Iron Curtain. During a particularly treacherous descent in the Caucus mountains, Dainius had saved the life of a Swiss mountaineer, who upon his safe return to Switzerland in 1972, arranged for Dainius, at the time part of the USSR National mountaineering team, to climb the Swiss peaks including the Matterhorn accompanied by two KGB minders. It was on this trip where Dainius was gifted the present 6265 Daytona by the unnamed Swiss Mountaineer, featuring the symbol of the Foundation for Alpine Research, (pictured on his wrist during an ascent). In 1991 during a climb of the Himalayan peak of Daulagyris (8,167M) adverse cold weather conditions and an knee injury saw Dainius not return from the expedition after a successful summit. Similar to the previously known Alpine signed pieces, this Daytona falls within the 2.7 million serial range, with the last three digits of the serial number engraved on the inside case back, which is also stamped with 6262. It is currently believed that these watches were produced to commemorate the 1952 expedition. However, it is possible that they were also commissioned for special members of the foundation throughout the production. This watch is intricately linked to the foundation that commissioned it and indeed it is accompanied by a decorative plate featuring the logo for Foundation for Alpine Research. Until recently, only four examples of the Rolex Daytona reference 6265 were known to bear the emblem of a Swiss cross surrounded by a knotted rope, baffling collectors and scholars for many years. However, a Perezscope article in July 2021 linked this logo, engraved on the case backs of these models, to supply sacks used during the 1952 ascent of Mount Everest. These sacks were supplied by the Swiss Foundation of Alpine Research. This discovery represents a significant and fascinating development in understanding the story behind these exceptionally rare timepieces. Reference 6265In the early 1970s, Rolex introduced references 6263 and 6265. These models remained available until 1988, and the main distinction between them was the type of bezel insert - the 6263 featured a black bezel insert, while the 6265 had a stainless steel one. Both models were powered by the renowned manually-wound Valjoux 727 caliber. Reference 6265 retained its classic stainless steel tachymeter bezel and featured screw-down crown, back and pushers ensuring waterproofness of the watch, thus enhancing its functionality. Besides these elements, the watches also included the Oyster signature. All these elements have become defining elements of the Daytona family and are indeed still used in many Daytona iterations. The historical importance of the 6265 in the development of the Daytona family makes any example of this reference a coveted piece. However, the present 6265 not only conveys this, but is also an exponent of Rolex's mysterious history, accentuating the attractiveness and rarity of the watch. Catalogue notePaul Newman Daytonas, as affectionately known within the watch community, are characterised by their distinctive Art Deco-style dials, officially referred to as 'exotic dials.' These dials were rumored to have appeared in as few as 1 in 20 manual-winding Daytona models from the 1960s to the 1980s. Initially, these watches did not garner much attention from the market but in the late 1980s, a group of Italian watch dealers and collectors coined the term 'Paul Newman' after the legendary American actor was photographed wearing his own reference 6239 on multiple occasions. Since then, the demand and market value for Paul Newman Daytonas have skyrocketed.The reference 6239, based on the earlier reference 6238, was introduced to the American market in 1963 and was the first Daytona model to bear the "Cosmograph" dial designation. One significant design change from the 6238 was the relocation of the Tachymeter scale - used for measuring distance over time - to the bezel, resulting in a 1mm increase in the watch's diameter. This allowed for more intricate and diverse dial designs, exemplified by the iconic 'exotic' dial configurations. Condition Report Catalogue Note Crafted during the golden age of watchmaking, the Rolex Daytona 'Paul Newman' Reference 6241, produced circa 1969, boasting a stainless steel case and an iconic "black exotic" dial configuration. The term "Paul Newman" has become synonymous with this reference, owing to the legendary actor's association with similar dial designs. The "exotic" dial of this Daytona is characterized by its striking black main dial adorned with contrasting white sub-dials, creating a visually captivating aesthetic. Beyond its aesthetic allure, the Reference 6241 is celebrated for its exceptional functionality as a chronograph wristwatch. Equipped with Rolex's renowned caliber 722 movement, this timepiece offers precise timekeeping and reliable performance, making it a trusted companion for both racing enthusiasts and horological aficionados alike. Between 1965 and 1969, approximately 3000 pieces of the Reference 6241 were produced. Of these, about 750 were crafted in 14kt and 18kt gold, while the remaining 2250 pieces were made in stainless steel. The bezel type differentiated the two from one another, with reference 6263, like the present lot, featuring an acrylic bezel and reference 6265, fitted with a metal bezel. The 6263 and 6265 models are further distinguished from their preceding references by the introduction of larger, screw-down chronograph pushers and winding crown and the addition of 'Oyster' signed to the dial. The introduction of these attributes marked the standard for all future references and are still utilized on Daytona models to this day. The present watch can be differentiated from other references 6263, because it has a movement number engraved under the balance wheel. At the time, only the gold versions of the Daytona has a movement number, but due to the lack of success of the watch, Rolex started equipping these calibre on steel models as well. This small difference makes this watch even more collectable.
