The so-called ‘exotic dial’, later nickname after the famed American actor, was featured on several references, from the early 6239 to later examples like the 6263 and 6265. Both with screw down chronograph pushers, they replaced the first Oyster model, reference 6240. The watches had an upgraded movement with the caliber 727, and a slightly thicker case. While the 6263 had a black acrylic bezel, the 6265 had a stainless steel bezel.;The present example is preserved in excellent condition with factory finishes to the lugs, and nice overall proportions. The desirable 'Panda' dial is lovely with luminous material that has aged to a light brown, and matching to the hands. The registers are clean and free of blemishes. In today's market where condition and originality is king, this wonderful reference 6265 is a must have watch from the important line of Rolex Cosmograph chronographs.

The so-called ‘exotic dial’, later nickname after the famed American actor, was featured on several references, from the early 6239 to later examples like the 6263 and 6265. Both with screw down chronograph pushers, they replaced the first Oyster model, reference 6240. The watches had an upgraded movement with the caliber 727, and a slightly thicker case. While the 6263 had a black acrylic bezel, the 6265 had a stainless steel bezel.;The present example is preserved in excellent condition with factory finishes to the lugs, and nice overall proportions. The desirable 'Panda' dial is lovely with luminous material that has aged to a light brown, and matching to the hands. The registers are clean and free of blemishes. In today's market where condition and originality is king, this wonderful reference 6265 is a must have watch from the important line of Rolex Cosmograph chronographs.

The model, the immediate successor to the reference 6239, featured a new black acrylic bezel with tachometer scale, and a redesigned case now slightly widened at the 3 in order to facilitate winding. It was also Rolex’s first chronograph to feature the wording ‘Daytona’. Rolex wound down production of push down button chronographs with the introduction of the reference 6240, the brands first chronograph featuring screw-down pushers, and the designation ‘Oyster’.;The present example, fresh to the market from the original owner, is among the elite of Daytona chronographs, not only is the case in 14k gold, but more importantly it sports the highly desirable and rare Paul Newman dial. This is enhanced by the very rare dial type with yellow background and black subsidiary dials featuring white numerals. As if this could not be any rarer, the black subsidiary dials are now turning tropical, thus making this lovely example one of the rarest models available to only a very lucky few.;The ‘Lemon’ dial Paul Newman seen here is only known in a limited number, a handful at most. The yellow patina varies in hue for each example, but all have engine-turned black subsidiary dials with white numerals. This is a marked difference from other known dial styles on gold examples, which typically feature a champagne dial and black numerals. The dial is well preserved and in original condition.;This fine 6241 Paul Newman is accompanied by its original 14k U.S. A. Jubilee bracelet. The watch has an honesty, which demonstrate that is has been lovingly cared for by it owner over the last approximately 50 years. Together with reference 6262, it was the last Rolex chronograph watch to be fitted with pump pushers. Reference 6240, 6263 and 6265 all feature water resistant screw down pushers. While physically similar to its predecessor reference 6241, reference 6264 was fitted with the upgraded Valjoux movement calibre 727.;The present watch is fitted with an beautiful "Paul Newman" dial, which is instantly recognizable due to its deco-style numerals within the subregisters. While Paul Newman himself donned an exotic dial reference 6239, his name is forever synonymous with exotic dialed Cosmograph wristwatches.;Its black on white grainé dial, coupled with red "Daytona" text, makes for an incredibly eye-catching and attractive wristwatch. The luminous dots have aged to a pleasing warm yellow tone.;Presented in excellent condition, this example boasts sharp finishes to the case and robust proportions. It furthermore retains its original and correct Mk 1 bezel, which is incredibly sought after today.

In an interesting twist of fate the Daytona chronographs with “Paul Newman” dials which are avidly sought after today were quite unpopular upon launch and this lack of commercial success led Rolex to produce very limited numbers making these timepieces exceedingly rare.;We are delighted to offer the present example with Mark 1.5 dial, based on the configuration and print of the text, in such original and complete condition.;The dial of the present lot is a pleasure to behold. It’s zen like serenity is further enhanced thanks to the lack of unnecessary inscriptions, the art-deco style of the font used and the hash marks with small squares found on the subsidiary dial are also characteristic of “Paul Newman” style dials. Adding further to its desirability is the fact that the outer minute track has turned a harmonious brown "tropical" color. Fitted with an acrylic bezel, the reference is also recognized for its screw-down pushers for improved water resistance.;It is interesting to underline the rare presence of the “millerighe” pushers that were only fitted on the earliest examples.;The combination of rarity, quality and good looks make this Rolex 6263 a trophy watch worthy of a prominent place in the world’s finest collections.

In production for only 3 short years from 1966 to 1969, we estimate that roughly 2000 pieces were produced in stainless steel, around 300 in 18k yellow gold and approximately 400 in 14k yellow gold. The present watch is part of the mega rare 14k yellow gold models specially made for the American market.;This reference differed from other Daytona models with a new case design that introduced a small protrusion under the crown, which allowed easier winding of the mechanical Valjoux caliber 722. It also featured a new bezel made of a metal support fitted with a black acrylic insert with a tachymeter scale printed in white. The “T SWISS T” designation at the lower edge of the dial by 6 o’clock indicates the use of tritium for the hands and luminous hour markers. It is also from this reference on that the word ‘Daytona’ would be officially printed on the dial.;Fitted with a warm 14k yellow gold case perfectly matching a gorgeous cream-colored grené dial and displaying the very much sought-after Paul Newman dial configuration, the present lot embodies the spirit of the American Daytona of the late 60’s. A watch that we can imagine the original owner wearing, whilst chilling on a lounge chair on the sun deck of his beach house, sipping a Tom Collins and listening to a Getz/Gilberto tune.;In very good overall condition, this beauty has been hidden and unworn for quite some time as witnessed by the colorful oxidation found on the case and is a true piece of refinement and sophistication with a dash of playfulness.

Likely purchased in 1968, Joanne Woodward chose this reference 6239 fitted with an ‘exotic’ dial, as a gift for Paul Newman as his passion for motorsport was just beginning. Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Newman was seen wearing several generations of Daytona models. This is the first and only ‘exotic’ dial Daytona he wore, making it the ultimate Rolex Daytona wristwatch. This wristwatch has been worn by Paul Newman lovingly over the years, but also well preserved by the consignor, James Cox. The case retains its original proportions, lines, and edges, and in our view, has never been polished. The wonderful, “DRIVE CAREFULLY ME” engraving on the case back is perfectly crisp and completely intact.;Likely to have been originally purchased at Tiffany & Co. in New York, an inventory number possibly engraved by the luxury retailer is found on the underside of the left lug. The dial has developed a creamy, warm patina that is consistent with its age. The luminous hour markers have also aged charismatically along with the luminous hands – all completely original and intact. It comes accompanied with a signed letter written by Paul Newman’s daughter, Nell Newman, documenting its provenance and her support of its sale. The Daytona is a model that will forever be associated with Paul Newman, made famous by him thanks to this very timepiece. The present lot therefore presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own one of the most mythical, most important, and most recognizable watches of the 20th century. It’s now being sold for the first time since leaving the inner circle of the Newman family, nearly 50 years after its purchase by Joanne Woodward. The model has in recent years, propelled to new heights in collectibility and popularity. While reference 6263 was produced from 1969 until the late 1980s, it is widely accepted that the rarest variant, such as the present watch, belongs to the earliest production batch. Today, the collecting community has dubbed this watch the "Mk 1" Panda. In fact, it has been an incredibly long time since one has graced the auction market.;The nickname "Panda" originates from the dial's exotic black and white color scheme which mimics its namesake. Due to the model's unpopularity at the time of production, only a very limited number of pieces were ever manufactured. As a result, the "Panda" is increasingly rare and sought-after today.;As Rolex scholarship becomes increasingly widespread and transparent, the standards in quality have become incredibly rigorous. The collecting community dissects and analyzes each nuance of a watch when it appears on the market - from the spacing of the Rolex font, to the inside case back - and it is imperative that all components are correct. It comes with great surprise, and immense pleasure, when a watch such as the present example arrives in such original and complete condition;Consigned by an important collector, this marvel bears all the correct details of a "Mk 1" Paul Newman Panda with 2.085 million serial number. The first, and most striking detail, is the "Mk 1" dial, which features thin "Rolex Oyster Cosmograph" text without any serifs. The "Paul Newman Panda" generally features three subtly different dial configurations in accordance to the serial number, and later examples display sharp serifs to the text.;Most importantly, the dial features a beautiful outer minute track that over time, has turned from black to a rich mocha tone that contrasts wonderfully with the warm grainé surface. The white dial too, has 'turned' a beautiful ivory tone. The luminous remains round and intact.;Other important details are the "Mk 1 millerighe” pushers, which were only fitted to the earliest 6263s. The case back, produced by C.R.S Spillman and stamped 6239, is correct, as scholarship suggests that early 6263s were fitted with the left over case backs of reference 6239 and 6241. The bracelet too, is stamped 2.70 with the correct 71N end links, confirming its originality to the rest of the watch.;All these subtleties come together to complete the story of the "Mk 1" Paul Newman Panda. Truly a sight to behold, its absolute rarity, combined with dashing looks renders it among the most impressive "Mk 1" Paul Newmans to grace the market in the past years.
