The history of the Birkin

The creation of the most coveted bag of the past decades began mid-flight, with a chance encounter between singer and actress Jane Birkin and Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas on a Paris–London flight in 1984. Sitting beside Dumas, Birkin lamented the lack of an elegant yet practical tote suited to her needs as a young mother. Inspired by this conversation, Dumas sketched a rectangular, soft, and spacious bag on the spot—featuring a polished base, saddle stitching, and even space for baby bottles. And so, the Birkin was born! Like the actress whose name it bears, the bag quickly became a timeless icon.

The models

The Birkin bag, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2024, comes in six sizes (20 cm, 25 cm, 30 cm, 35 cm, 40 cm, and 50 cm) and over twenty materials such as Vache Liégée, Veau Doblis, ostrich, lizard, and more. Each year, Hermès reveals new colors, expanding its already rich palette. Though typically crafted in soft leather, a structured version of the Birkin has recently been introduced.
