However, alongside these two iconic models, Patek Philippe also released non-chronograph versions of the timepieces: reference 1526 and the present reference 2497 (and its waterproof twin 2438/1), featuring case and dial designs very closely resembling their chronograph counterparts.;Reference 2497 is in fact one of the rarest vintage perpetual calendar models made by Patek Philippe. It is distinguished by the sweep centre seconds, the only vintage perpetual calendar made by the brand to feature this detail. The uniqueness of this detail earned its Italian nickname "Secondi al Centro". In order to achieve this, Patek Philippe modified a batch of their exquisite calibre 27SC which is counted among the greatest movements of the past century, (SC standing in fact for Seconde au Centre)and was later renamed to 27SC Q - Q for quantième: perpetual. An analysis of the movement numbers highlights how Patek Philippe itself had very strong feelings for the reference: a unique case for the Maison's vintage perpetual calendars, all the movement numbers for reference 2497 and 2438/1 are sequential: 180 calibre 27SC were upgraded, with movement numbers between 888'000 and 888'179. About 115 of these were used for reference 2497, the remaining for ref. 2438/1, thus effectively making these two models the scarcest vintage perpetual calendars serially produced by Patek Philippe.;The dial as well could be considered as a masterpiece of design. Since the 1920s, Patek Philippe followed the Bauhaus dictate of "form follows function", and the dial of reference 2497 is without a doubt one of its most successful application. The wealth of information of the calendar is arranged in an extremely clean and readable way. The fifth of a second combined with Arabic five minutes divisions - typical of pieces from earlier decades - are present, but the elimination of the railway-style and tachymetre scale grants the ensemble more levity.;The present watch - absent from the auction scene for nearly 20 years, having last been publicly seen in 1998 - is a rare occasion for the discerning collector to acquire one of the rarest, attractive and refined Patek Philippe timepieces from the past century.

However, alongside these two iconic models, Patek Philippe also released non-chronograph versions of the timepieces: reference 1526 and the present reference 2497 (and its waterproof twin 2438/1), featuring case and dial designs very closely resembling their chronograph counterparts.;Reference 2497 is in fact one of the rarest vintage perpetual calendar models made by Patek Philippe. It is distinguished by the sweep centre seconds, the only vintage perpetual calendar made by the brand to feature this detail. The uniqueness of this detail earned its Italian nickname "Secondi al Centro". In order to achieve this, Patek Philippe modified a batch of their exquisite calibre 27SC which is counted among the greatest movements of the past century, (SC standing in fact for Seconde au Centre)and was later renamed to 27SC Q - Q for quantième: perpetual. An analysis of the movement numbers highlights how Patek Philippe itself had very strong feelings for the reference: a unique case for the Maison's vintage perpetual calendars, all the movement numbers for reference 2497 and 2438/1 are sequential: 180 calibre 27SC were upgraded, with movement numbers between 888'000 and 888'179. About 115 of these were used for reference 2497, the remaining for ref. 2438/1, thus effectively making these two models the scarcest vintage perpetual calendars serially produced by Patek Philippe.;The dial as well could be considered as a masterpiece of design. Since the 1920s, Patek Philippe followed the Bauhaus dictate of "form follows function", and the dial of reference 2497 is without a doubt one of its most successful application. The wealth of information of the calendar is arranged in an extremely clean and readable way. The fifth of a second combined with Arabic five minutes divisions - typical of pieces from earlier decades - are present, but the elimination of the railway-style and tachymetre scale grants the ensemble more levity.;The present watch - absent from the auction scene for nearly 20 years, having last been publicly seen in 1998 - is a rare occasion for the discerning collector to acquire one of the rarest, attractive and refined Patek Philippe timepieces from the past century.

The sparse ownership of this watch only underlies its importance and desirability.;Featuring a stunning silvered opaline finish, this dial is preserved in astounding condition. The enamel is thick and raised, with a strong accent above the “e” in Genève. It is free of visible tarnishing and spotting, attesting to the care and love it has received throughout its lifespan. The case is of stunning quality. Produced by Wenger, it is distinguished by its rounded caseback, short lugs and larger case diameter. The caseback is furthermore stamped with its case maker’s mark, a “1” inside a hammer. Beneath two of the lugs are deep and crisp hallmarks. There is very pronounced fluting to the lugs.;One striking feature of the present watch is its captivating original Patek Philippe white gold bracelet produced by Gay Frères, which is flexible and designed with a “Florentine” finish. It is a dream come true for any collector, as it not only provides great flair, but is also confirmed by the Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives.;In addition, the bracelet features a small detail that may not strike a casual observer. On the upper left side of the bottom bracelet is a small groove, which is also repeated on the top the bracelet. This is no flaw. It was first introduced in 1951, and is a gem of horological design with its balanced symmetry, spectacular curves, and large case size. In fact, reference 2497, along with its water resistant sibling reference 2438/1, is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful perpetual calendar wristwatches ever made.;The dials of first series reference 2497, as seen in the present example, were fitted with Arabic and dot raised hour markers, whereas models produced later featured faceted, baton hour markers. This wristwatch features a stunning silver opaline dial. The case was produced by Wenger, recognizable by the rounded caseback, shorter lugs and larger diameter. The stepped claw-shaped lugs perfectly complement the beautiful concave bezel.;One striking feature of the present watch is its original, as confirmed by the Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives, visually enchanting woven gold bracelet that gives this timepiece a glamorous aura of vivid modernism and vibrant sophistication.;This timepiece, made in 1954, remained unsold for six years. As time passed, society's tastes changed. We believe that Patek Philippe made modifications on the present lot to make it more attractive to clients of the 1960s by adding a gold bracelet, and replacing the original "feuille" hands with the present dagger shaped luminous hands.;Scholarship tells us that a combined total of only 179 examples were made across both references 2497 and 2438/1, with movement numbers spanning from 888.000 to 888.178. With movement number 888'093, it’s an early example made in the first quarter of production.;The present lot was first sold in Australia in 1960 and purchased by the father of the current owner around 1967. He wore it sparingly and soon after put it in a safe in the early 1970s, never to be worn again.;During its lifetime, the present lot has received only one professional servicing in 1969, evidenced by the service mark in the caseback. Consequently, it has remained basically untouched for the past 60 years. Milanese bracelets, as found on the present lot, are very fragile and can rapidly show signs of wear. The superb Milanese bracelet on this watch is in almost new condition, proof that the watch has spent the majority of its life tucked away in a safe and only worn sporadically with care.;In an interesting turn of events, this timepiece has come back to its birth grounds. Having travelled halfway across the globe from the Patek Philippe workshops in Geneva to Australia in 1960, the "Sydney Rose" has returned to Geneva where it will be auctioned.;To the best of our knowledge, the present lot is the only reference 2497 with luminous hands.;We have rarely seen a reference 2497 in such untouched condition, which along with its original fitted box, makes for a truly collectible timepiece of enduring value.
