The model was commissioned by Pan-Am to help pilots understand the effect of long distance travel. The second time zone hand provide them with the ability to easily read 24 hour time for a given time zone. During the production run of the 1675, there were many changes and variations made to the reference, both with respect to the dial and the case as well. For example, the present watch is a coveted Mk1 iteration, featuring a “string-like” coronet and long “E” within the word Rolex. These small variations of the watch and the different versions of dials are details which have fascinated enthusiasts of Rolex for decades.

The first Rolex GMT-Master was designed in concert with Pan American World Airways, who was entering the world’s first commercial jet-liner into service in the 1950s. Their pilots needed a way to tell time at destination and place of origin simultaneously. Rolex’s answer was the signature red and blue 24-hour bezel, and a 24 hour hand, which was an elegantly simple solution to a complex issue. The GMT-Master quickly became the preferred watch of pilots and jetsetters alike and is still referred to by Rolex as ‘The Cosmopolitan Watch’. Thought the 1675 is the second generation of GMT-Master, it is considered by many the most pure. The present example still retains the early gilt dial of the first generation 6542 models. Produced during a painstaking and complex process, the ‘gilt’ lettering gets its color from the brass plate upon which the dial is made. These early Rolex dials are prized for their shine and sheen, and remain highly sought after by collectors and scholars of the Rolex brand alike.

Many collectors regard the present example, a second-generation reference 1675, as the quintessential watch in the GMT-Master line. Its iconic red and blue aluminum bezel, affectionately known as the Pepsi, along with its matte black dial, exude both elegance and sportiness. This watch is presented in beautiful condition exhibiting a rich patina, and gently faded bezel while being accompanied by its original boxes, papers, and sales receipts from new which is no small feat for a watch dating to 1977. As with many vintage watches, the closer we look, the more interesting things become. The receipt (for $210.00) is made out to Mr. Charles Elwood Yeager. It was a watch born to fly, an icon of the jet-age. The first Rolex GMT-Master was designed in concert with Pan American World Airways who was entering the world’s first commercial jet-liner into service in the 1950s, and whose pilots needed a way to tell time at destination, and place of origin, simultaneously. Rolex’s answer was the signature red and blue 24-hour bezel, and a 24 hour hand, which was an elegantly simple solution to a complex issue. The GMT-Master quickly became the preferred watch of pilots and jetsetters alike and is still referred to by Rolex as ‘The Cosmopolitan Watch’. Many collectors regard the present example, a second-generation reference 1675, as the quintessential watch in the GMT-Master line. Its iconic red and blue aluminum bezel, affectionately known as the Pepsi, along with its matte black dial, exude both elegance and sportiness. This watch is presented in beautiful condition exhibiting a rich patina, and gently faded bezel while being accompanied by its original boxes, papers, and sales receipts from new which is no small feat for a watch dating to 1977. As with many vintage watches, the closer we look, the more interesting things become. The receipt (for $210.00) is made out to Mr. Charles Elwood Yeager. The national emblem of the UAE, also referred to as the “Qurayash Hawk”, is featured prominently on the black matt dial just above the 6 o’clock hour marker. The hawk, or falcon, is particularly significant in Emirati culture as falconry, the practice of using a hawk or falcon to catch prey in the desert, it is a very important part of their tradition. On the chest of the bird lies a red circle depicting a picture of a dhow, which was the sailboat of choice throughout the history of that geographical area, and below the talons of the hawk we see “United Arab Emirates” written in Arabic on a red banner.Some of this special edition GMT-Master 1675 were issued to the helicopter pilots serving in the country’s military, while some of the watches were gifted by government officials to people who had served the nation of the UAE in some official capacity.The present watch being offered by was gifted to the original owner Tim Panter, a Royal Navy Clearance diver who had spent a lot of time in the middle east who later began working for Subservs among other marine services contractors in the gulf.
