  Description : Thomas Tompion, London, number 244;The case surmounted by a very substantial tied-foliate-bud handle on circular pommels over a caddy top applied with four gilt metal pierced foliate mounts and a moulded cornice, the sides with silk-backed cast gilt-brass sound frets and rectangular glazed panels, the front door with matching sound fret over a pair of (replaced) gilt brass escutcheons, on a moulded base and block feet, the gilt brass rectangular dial measuring 7.75 inches by 6.75 inches, the upper part centrally signed 'Thomas Tompion LONDINI Fecit' flanked by twin subsidiary dials, the left for rise-and-fall regulation, the right for Strike/Not strike, over the silvered Roman and Arabic dial with half-quarter markers enclosing the finely matted centre with shaped chamfered mock pendulum aperture and blued steel hands, secured via three latched dial feet to the substantial frontplate, the plates united by seven knopped pillars, each with four delicate ring turnings, both going and striking trains with chain fusees, the former terminating in a pivotted verge escapement, the latter with rack strike on a bell, the quarter repeat work mounted on the cut-out frontplate and actuated from either side of the case via a pair of hinged blued-steel L-shaped levers;41cms (16ins) high

  Description : It is currently fully wound and not running, but will probably run if cleaned. It is lacking a minute hand, and has a replaced hour hand. The dial and outer case are circa 1720. The dial appears to be of good quality with only surface wear, minor scuffing and wear due to age. The case is also of high quality, although with modest rubbing to the figures. The inner case with dents and now lacking shutter for winding hole.

  Description : Number 2895, Circa 1700 Gilt movement signed Thomas Tompion, balance cock finely pierced and engraved with acanthus leaf scrolling, silver Arabic regulation, verge escapement and fusee, plates separated by tulip pillars, pillar plate stamped with batch number '360' between the barrel and fusee, later white enamel dial with finely painted black Roman numerals bordered by outer Arabic divisions at five minute intervals, steel beetle and poker hands, the horn case with painted ferns and swivel bow marked EB beneath coronet and large retaining spring are later additions and probably of continental manufacture.51mm.

Over the last century, they have educated the public using interactive and hands on exhibits on topics ranging from the sciences to agriculture, energy and technology. From 1942 until the 1980s, the museum's Hall of Timekeeping, sponsored by the Elgin Watch Company gave the public an overview the history of horology. The exhibit was closed in the 80s due to fire damage. The museum later organized an exhibition called Time which was on view from 2001 until 2004. This exhibit included timepieces from the Rockford Time Museum, the City of Chicago National Time Museum as well as private collectors and timepieces owned by the museum itself..Julius Rosenwald, the Chairman of Sears, Roebuck and Company was a founder of the museum and in the 1920s donated $3 million to convert the old Palace of Fine Arts into an interactive museum based on the model of the Munich, Deutsches Museum. Leopold Metzenberg another Sears executive, a passionate watch collector, was a propoent of the museum and upon his death gifted many watches to the museum.
