Picasso Only: Replica Handbag and Jewelry Shopping Pays Tribute to the Master
27-06-20252023 marks the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s death. To commemorate this milestone, Replica Handbag and Jewelry Shopping’s Art & Collection department presents a special sale titled “Picasso Only,” featuring over thirty of the artist’s works, including 1950s ceramics and a never-before-seen collection of works on paper.
Pablo Picasso the Ceramist
Ceramics played a vital role in Picasso’s creative process. In 1946, he met Georges and Suzanne Ramié, owners of the Madoura pottery studio in Vallauris. From 1947 to 1971, Picasso created over 3,500 pieces. Ceramics allowed him to break down the boundaries between the so-called “decorative arts” and “fine arts.” As both painter and sculptor, he subverted traditional ceramics—using them as canvases for decoration or reshaping them entirely, crafting new sculptural forms like pitchers with handles transformed into facial features or anatomical parts, or turning a bottle into a bird.
Bullfighting was central to Picasso’s cultural heritage. After the war, bullfighting scenes frequently appeared in his work, crossing various artistic techniques. In the 1953 piece Corrida sur fond noir, he reimagines the ceramic medium, using it to construct the space of the arena itself.
Pablo Picasso and Printmaking
Printmaking may be the technique Picasso explored most deeply, offering him vast freedom for innovation. He worked closely with Mourlot Studios for lithography—mostly in black and white—, with the Crommelynck brothers for etching, and with Hidalgo Arnéra for numerous linocuts.
The etching and aquatint Kneeling Painter with Spectators (1966) captures the Catalan artist’s nervous, expressive strokes against a charcoal-black background. Negative space outlines the faces of silent onlookers, witnessing the artist at work in the intimacy of his studio.
