The house of Givenchy was founded in 1951 by the 24 year old Hubert de Givenchy, when he began his career as a designer. It took two years before his Givenchy University line was launched. The brand rapidly became successful and attracted an international clientele.

The designer also met the actress Audrey Hepburn in 1953. She became his muse and inspired his first fragrances in 1957.

He launched a men’s ready-to-wear collection in 1973 before receiving the ‘Dé d'or’ (golden thimble) award in 1978. The success of the brand continued to grow over the years to such an extent that Givenchy was taken over by the LVMH group in 1988.

Hubert de Givenchy retired from the business in 1995 to devote himself full-time to his second love – antiques. He passed his role as creative director to young English designers, such as John Galliano and then Alexander McQueen.

Givenchy still has an image today of style and sensuality. Its bags are restrained and refined with a respect for detail. The brand has become a big name in fashion and is a favourite with women all over the world.
