Si l'on considère que la technique de la peinture sur émail date du début du XVIIème siècle, (cité par Félibien dans son Principes de l'Architecture, de la sculpture, de la peinture et des autres arts qui en dépendent , publié en 1676), notre montre est parmi les premières réalisations utilisant cette technique. La qualité de ses faces émaillées est exceptionnelle, et peut Àªtre attribuée À la famille Toutin, dont le fondateur de la dynastie, Jean, s'établit À Blois vers 1604..Il est peu vraisemblable que Jean Toutin soit l'unique inventeur de la technique sur émail, mais son école À Blois est devenue l'une des références dans le domaine des montres émaillées jusqu'au milieu du XVIIème siècle. Les artisans de Blois ont évidemment beaucoup apporté au développement de cette technique, notamment par l'enrichissement de la palette des couleurs..Ces montres représentaient la quintessence de l'Å“uvre d'art, très peu de contemporains de Jean Toutin connaissait son secret, seuls ses deux fils Henri et Jean II pouvaient prétendre À cette technique si particulière. Compte tenu de la période vers 1640 nous pouvons attribuer la qualité de cet email aux frères Toutin qui ont su perpétuer la palette de couleurs inimitables de leur père..Les travaux de la famille Toutin sont décrits dans le Tardy, Dictionnaire des Horlogers FranÀ§ais, il est mentionné que le fils Henry, s'établit À Paris vers 1634, habite St Louis en l'Ile au Palais, ce qui correspond également À la provenance de notre montre qui est selon nos recherches, de l'école de Paris. En tout point, la correspondance des dates est logique puisque notre montre est signée sur le mouvement par l'horloger Estienne de Chavanne, également cité dans le Dictionnaire des Horlogers FranÀ§ais, Tardy, (Paris. 1643)..L'une des faces de cette montre représente La Vierge À l'enfant À la colonne, d'après Simon Vouet, tableau aujourd'hui conservé au Musée de l'Ermitage À Saint Petersbourg et une autre version À l'Ashmolean Museum d'Oxford. Cette reprise d'une Å“uvre de l'un des plus grands maîtres de l'époque, marque l'importance de cette pièce, vraisemblablement une commande spéciale..Si les montres de cette époque sont aujourd'hui conservées dans les plus grandes collections ou musées du monde, Le Louvre ou le Metropolitan Museum of Art, certaines pièces parmi les plus exceptionnelles attribuées ou signées par la famille Toutin sont conservées dans les collections du Patek Philippe Museum.

Later he served in the U.S. surveyor-general of.public land office before being appointed as assistant engineer.under Lieutenant Robert E. Lee. Kayser surveyed the Mississippi.River and reported on the harbor improvement project to Lee. He.acted as a government surveyor until 1839, when he was selected to.serve as the first city engineer for the city of St. Louis. He held.this position off and on until 1857. In 1871 and 1873, he was.elected city comptroller. Henry Kayser died October 16, 1884, in.Hoboken, New Jersey.
