Panerai Radiomir base Watches

The Radiomir is both a great success and a great classic from Panerai. It has a military history and high-tech specifications.

In 1936 the army ordered Panerai to create a waterproof, hard-wearing, reliable and easy to read watch for use on submarines. A prototype, named ‘Radiomir’, after the luminous substance used to make the numbers legible, was tested with success.

Two years later, production of Radiomir watches for the Italian navy began. This watch has a large case (47 mm in diameter) in the shape of a cushion, wire loop strap attachments welded to the middle, screw-down winding crown, luminous dial and a hand-wound, mechanical movement. The broad, greased leather strap with punch holes, was designed to be worn over a diving suit.

Following a request from the Egyptian navy in 1956, Panerai produced a larger Radiomir watch with an Angelus 240 movement, eight day power reserve and graduations every five minutes to calculate immersion time. A new edition, identical to this design, known as ‘The Egyptian’, with a 60 mm dial (limited edition of 500), went on sale in 2009.
