In production between 1950 and 1985, over this 35-year period, only 349 specimens were crafted, demonstrating the meticulous attention to detail Patek Philippe invested into each example.  Over this long span of time, reference 2499 can be classified into four distinct series. The first one, produced between 1950 and 1960 can be distinguished for its square chronograph pushers and tachymeter scale, slightly smaller case and Arabic numerals. From 1955 to 1964, the second series introduced the round pushers commonly associated with the reference and while it retained the tachymeter scale some dials also featured baton indexes as well as Arabic ones. The third series, made between 1960 and 1978 reconfigured the dial design by removing the tachymeter scale and exclusively featuring baton indexes. From 1978 until 1985, the fourth series remained fundamentally indistinguishable from the previous series, the only improvement being the introduction of sapphire crystal. The present watch is a beautiful example of this last series, and in fact after it, only two more pieces were made before reference 2499 was discontinued - one now sits at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva and the other one was sold at auction in 2012.  Reference 2499 has captivated collectors and enthusiasts alike with its enduring allure and historic importance, demonstrated and recognised by Patek Philippe itself with the launching of reference 5970 in 2004 as a tribute to the legendary 2499. The present example, accompanied by its Certificate of Origin and retaining good case proportions - the stamp of the present watch, key number 28, attributes its making to Ateliers Réunis - presents a rare opportunity to acquire a wonderful example of Patek Philippe’s horological mastery in the family of perpetual calendar chronographs.

Condition Report Saleroom Notice Please note that the dial and the moon phase disc indicate that, although they are period correct, they have come from another reference 2499 example. Provenance Antiquorum, Geneva, April 1992, Lot 545 Antiquorum, St-Moritz, February 1990, Lot 220 Catalogue Note The Patek Philippe Reference 2499, particularly its 3rd series, stands as a testament to horological excellence and timeless elegance. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this iconic timepiece epitomizes the pinnacle of luxury watchmaking. The Reference 2499 was crafted in four distinct series, each with its unique characteristics. The first series is easily recognizable with its slightly smaller case, Arabic numerals, square pushers, and tachymeter. Moving to the second series, the tachymeter is retained, but both Arabic numerals and baton markers are employed. A significant shift occurs with the case design, now featuring round pushers. In the third and fourth series, the case design remains consistent with its predecessor. However, Patek Philippe makes notable adjustments by removing the tachymeter scale and opting for baton markers exclusively. The difference between the third and fourth series is minimal, with the introduction of a sapphire crystal in the fourth series marking a notable change. Introduced in 1960, the Reference 2499 3rd series, like this present model, remained in production until 1978, with only a limited number of these exquisite timepieces crafted. A star of the vintage watches collecting market since the very beginning, this model is now considered “endgame” when it comes to vintage Patek Philippe pieces. The case design is without objection deemed one of the most successful ever created: while appearing deceptively simple at first glance, in depth analysis points out a number of details – such as the contrast between concave bezel and convex band, and of course the grooved lugs - which blend together to create a feeling of elegant masculinity, with just a touch of flamboyancy. It is not a coincidence that such design has been inspiration for some of the most appreciated modern Patek Philippe pieces, such as reference 3970, 5004 and 5016.;From the point of view of rarity as well this is a remarkable model: in production for nearly 40 years, (approximately from 1949 to 1988) the total output for the reference is of 349 pieces in yellow and pink gold (plus two additional platinum pieces). That means an average of less than 10 watches per year: it is no surprise that this reference, even during its commercialization, frustrated countless collectors who had to wait years for the delivery of the piece, and of course only a fraction of the requests were satisfied.;Four series are known to exist for reference 2499;- First series, defined by the square pushers rather than round ones and railway dial with tachymetre scale, this series can be further divided in the very early examples made by Vichet - with flat back, more pronounced downturning of the lugs, and slightly smaller diameter – and the later ones made by Wenger, who will also make the cases for the following series;- Second series, with round pushers, but still railway dial like the first series;- Third series (the present version): the dial evolves to a cleaner, more modern design, losing the railway divisions and tachymetre scale.;- Fourth series, which maintains the looks of the third series but features a mineral crystal.

This achingly gorgeous timepiece’s case is untouched, the dial is bedazzling and the movement is flawless.;Superlative adjectives are used to describe an object which is at the upper or lower limit of a quality. With the present reference 2499 superlatives are hard to find, is it the best? The most perfect? The most beautiful? For us, it is a mix of all these and so much more. It is a vision of beauty and grace woven from the same material as dreams.;The case of present watch has never been polished, as evidenced by the large proportions of the case. The signature stepped lugs are powerful, the dial is pristine with the raised hard enamel writing perfectly intact and the movement has not been touched since it left the Patek Philippe ateliers in 1971.;There are times when a particular complication is associated immediately with a brand. The perpetual calendar chronograph is unmistakably part of Patek Philippe’s genetic code, a complication for which Patek Philippe has set the benchmark and of which is the undisputed leader.;To fully understand this interlink, one must go back to the reference 1518 from 1941 when Patek Philippe launched its first perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch, which also happened to be the world’s first perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch made in series.;Reference 2499 replaced reference 1518 in 1951 and was made for a period of 34 years, until 1985, in four different series. Produced between 1951 and 1985, in a limited number of approximately 349 examples, this model is the second generation of Patek Philippe’s lineage of high quality precision perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatches. The reference 2499 replaced its predecessor, the reference 1518 introduced in 1941. The restrained, classic style of the 1940s gave way to a larger and more robust watch, and while the earliest examples resemble the reference 1518 with square chronograph pushers, the larger reference 2499 was designed with an exuberant appeal reflecting the hopeful climate of the post-war 1950s. The reference 2499 is especially desirable due its large and well-proportioned 37.5-millimeter case. This was a massive size for the era in which they were produced – when most mens’ watches measured between 32 and 35 mm. Research over the years has determined that over its 35-year history, the reference 2499 underwent subtle changes. Patek Philippe initially used famed case maker, Vichet, to manufacture the 2499’s case, however early on switched their production to the Wenger atelier. The Vichet case had pronounced, elongated lugs, and a flat case back, while the Wenger case featured a beautifully domed case back with more compact lugs, as found on the present timepiece.;Patek Philippe evolved the dial designs as well, and can be categorized into the following four series;• First series: distinguished by square chronograph pushers, applied Arabic numerals and tachymeter scale.;• Second series: first to use round chronograph pushers, either applied Arabic or baton numerals, and tachymeter scale.;• Third series: to which the present example belongs, round chronograph buttons, applied baton numerals and outer seconds divisions, the tachymeter scale has been removed.;• Fourth series: round chronograph pushers, applied baton numerals and out seconds division, with sapphire crystal, reference 2499/100.;Every element of the 2499 exudes quality. Inside, every component of its 13-ligne movement is superbly handfinished, as certified by the Geneva Seal quality stamp found on its bridge. This lovely perpetual calendar chronograph from 1968 is in beautifully preserved, original condition. The case displays strong definition to the lugs, and well-preserved hallmarks, and the expansive, highly legible dial exhibits fully defined, raised hard enamel print throughout. Printed using champlevé enamel, an indelible technique in which the dial’s surface is first engraved, filled with powdered enamel, and finally baked in a high temperature oven, the crispness and definition of the print on the present lot leads one to conclude that the dial was never restored or cleaned in any way. The reference 2499 is a milestone wristwatch, and we’re delighted to offer this premium, third-series example. Its timeless aesthetics combined with exclusivity and superb collectability presents a rare opportunity for discerning collectors.

A total of 349 pieces were made, making this a highly exclusive reference in the company’s history.;- First series: Square chronograph buttons, applied Arabic numerals and tachometer scale.;- Second series: Round chronograph buttons, either applied baton or applied Arabic numerals and tachometer scale, of which the present lot is an example.;- Third series: Round chronograph buttons, applied baton numerals and outer seconds divisions.;- Fourth series: Round chronograph buttons, applied baton numerals, outer seconds divisions and sapphire crystal.;Interestingly, Patek Philippe chose Vichet to make the brand new reference 2499, but then, shortly after, switched to Wenger. The Vichet cases are known to have more pronounced and elongated lugs than those produced by Wenger. Also, the early Vichet cases have flat domed casebacks, resulting in the watches resting on their four lugs when put flat on a table, like a contemporary work of art.;The dial of the present lot displays the signature of the prestigious Patek Philippe retailer Tiffany & Co.;Only two reference 2499 second series with Tiffany & Co. signature are known, one with Arabic numerals (sold by Phillips, De Pury & Luxembourg on May 13, 2002 which has remained ever since in an important private collection) and the other, the present lot, with baton indexes, making this timepiece even more covetable.;The dials of the two reference 2499 second series with Tiffany & Co. signature are quite different. The model with the Arabic numerals features the Tiffany & Co signature above the day and month windows with the brand name printed below said windows. Furthermore, the moonphase display is circled and there is no “Swiss” indication. With the present lot, other than the baton indexes, the Tiffany & Co signature is printed right beneath the moonphase display which is not circled. Two gold “pearls” are placed at the 5 o’clock and 7 o’clock positions and the dial further has “Swiss” printed under the retailer’s signature. These elements lead us to believe that the dial may well have been a special order.;The period correct heavy weaved yellow gold bracelet is signed Tiffany &Co. on the clasp and furthermore, the balance bridge is stamped ‘HOX’, indicating that the watch was destined for the American market.;There are collectible wristwatches, then there are watches woven from the fabric of dreams, and the present reference 2499 is of the latter.;The large 37.5mm case is of superb quality with incredibly strong definition to the lugs and the hallmarks on the lugs remain crisp. The dial will make any collector’s heart beat faster, with a harmonious cream glow and its strong, perfectly preserved raised, hard enamel print.;The last reference 2499 second series bearing the Tiffany & Co. signature to appear on the market was sold in 2002. The present lot last appeared on the international auction market in 1991 and has been part of an important private collection for over 25 years. Consequently, these models are not only uber-rare, but appear on the international market only every decade or so confirming their ultra-collectible status. It is quite possible that once the present lot leaves us today, at least another decade will go by before another example is seen at auction.;Not only does the present timepiece merge mechanical complexity with elegance and sophistication, but its extreme rarity, prestigious Tiffany & Co. signature and pristine condition will make it without any doubt, a trophy for the world’s most discerning collector.

Each time a model appears, the auction room is filled with a sense of exhilaration. However, when a model is unknown like the present watch and appears on the market, exhilaration turns into euphoria.;Reference 2499 is the proud heir to reference 1518, the very first perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch made in series in the history of horology. It replaced reference 1518 in 1951 and was made for a period of 34 years until 1985. The reference was produced in four different series.;With the fourth series, Patek Philippe added /100 to the reference number which consequently became ref 2499/100. Considered the last true vintage Patek Philippe chronograph wristwatch, the present reference 2499/100 has an exceedingly unusual feature of having a sapphire display back.;It was only in the late 1980s that brands started offering sapphire crystal backs on their timepieces. Before that, sapphire backs were reserved for deck watches and chronometers submitted to timing trials.;Legend has it that a prominent European collector, wishing to be able to admire the superb hand finished movement of his reference 2499/100, contacted Patek Philippe in the early 1980s to obtain a sapphire crystal back for his timepiece. Obviously, the case back could not be simply cut open to have a crystal inserted. Therefore, Patek Philippe created a new caseback for the watch, similar in shape to the bezel and crystal. Since the gold hallmarks, case maker's mark, reference and case numbers could not be stamped in, or outside of the caseback, Patek Philippe decided to stamp all gold and case maker hallmarks beneath the lugs. The case and reference numbers were inscribed within the case, which we also see on the present example.;Until today, only 3 reference 2499/100s with a display case back were known: one belonged to the collector having ordered the first watch, one was made for Mr. Philippe Stern and another was made for a Patek Philippe director. We are delighted to have discovered the present fourth model, previously unknown and fresh to the market which will certainly be the crown jewel of any collection.
