Nicknamed the ‘Homeplate’ due to the pentagon shaped luminous plots along the outer perimeter of the dial, the reference 7032/0 Montecarlo was the first chronograph wristwatch produced by the brand. Adorned by a steel bezel with tachymeter scale allowing for easy view when activating the chronograph, the watch is powered by a Valjoux caliber 7734 mechanical movement. Another signature design is the cyclops date at the 6 o’clock mark, rather than the 3 o’clock mark of its Rolex brethren. The Tudor 7032 paved the way for a long, and continuing, line of Tudor chronographs. This watch comes to us as the Property of a New York City Police Officer.

The earliest models, produced for approximately two years only, were fitted with dials named by collectors as the “Home Plate” due to the shape of their luminous hour markers that resemble a home plate in baseball. Produced predominately with a gray dial with orange accents, these gorgeous chronographs are amongst the most sought after of all Tudor watches. The ultimate, is the hardly ever seen Black Dial Tudor Monte Carlo Home Plate, like the present lot. Rolex introduced Tudor to the market in 1945 with the intention of producing high quality watches at an affordable price. Throughout its history, with Tudor, Rolex experimented with different designs and concepts, later to be used in Rolex’s own watches. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the “Home Plate” has become an icon in the vintage Rolex collecting community. Its design from afar can easily be mistaken for a Rolex Daytona reference 6265 thanks to its steel bezel with printed tachymeter and screw-down pushers and crown, but is larger with a case diameter of 40mm compared to the Daytona’s 37mm size. So rare is the black dial variant of the Home Plate, only two examples of the model have ever appeared at auction over the past 7 years. The present watch is fresh to the auction market, offered in lovely condition with a remarkably well-preserved dial showing hardly any signs of age. Accompanied by its original inner and outer Tudor presentation boxes, this exceptionally rare Tudor chronograph is an extremely rare opportunity for the aficionado of ultimate sports watches.

These gorgeous chronographs are amongst the most sought after of all Tudor watches.;Contrary to today, brands did not have design studios and often depended on the dial makers to offer new designs compliant with their genetic code. As such, some dials made it into production whilst other remained prototypes.;The present lot is also accompanied by a prototype dial made by famed dial maker Singer, who also supplied dials to Tudor's sister brand Rolex. This dial displays a superb black/white/red color scheme bearing the Tudor codes, but which unfortunately never made it into production.;It is interesting to note that this prototype dial uses a logo that Tudor stopped using in 1968/1969 and as such shows that two years prior to the launch of the reference 7030/0 Tudor and Singer had already started playing with dial designs of Tudor's future chronograph,.;Almost a decade ago, an executive from the defunct dial maker Singer, discovered albums dating from the 1970s with prototype dials made for Rolex, Tudor, Universal Genève and other brands Singer used to supply dials to. These vibrant, unusual and creative prototype dials are a zeitgeist of the pulse of the late sixties and early seventies.;This prototype dial was part of the discovery. It was designed for Tudor who refused it and consequently it was never mounted.
