The reference can generally be divided into two series. While those from the first generation feature 'olive' pushers and a larger case size, second generation examples feature flat pushers and a relatively smaller case diameter. At the time of production, the relatively large case size was incredibly unusual for the period. Yet, the model exudes a modern appearance today.;This watch is an excellent example of a first generation reference 2508. Fitted with elegant "olive" pushers, it most notably features both telemeter and tachymeter scales on the dial. Reference 2508 typically displays a simple dial layout. To find one, such as the present example, with a multi-scale design is very rare. At further glance, the retailer's signature is also proudly displayed underneath the center of the dial, denoting the watch was retailed at Cravanzola in Roma, Italy. This small detail adds another element of delight.;One should also marvel at the case number and reference number, which are sharp, crisp and legible on the case back. Early examples, like the present watch, had the serial number punched on the case back. In comparison, later generations featured the case number finely engraved on the edge of the case back.;Proudly displayed in literature, this watch fulfills the requirements of any stringent collector and scholar.

ACCOMPANIED BY A LETTER OF S. SMITH AND SONS LTD THAT THE ORDER IS READY. Conformément à la lettre reproduite ci-dessous, la montre en question fut commandée par Sir David Brown auprès du concessionnaire Rolex, S. Smith and Sons Ltd. Une telle provenance confère à cette Rolex un caractère exceptionnel et en fait incontestablement une pièce de collection unique. Sir David Brown (1904-1993) était en effet industriel britannique illustre. Après avoir développé le groupe David Brown Limited, ce passionné d'automobile achète en 1947 Aston Martin et Lagonda, deux marques en difficulté qu'il va relancer. Il donnera à Aston Martin ses propres initiales DB et un palmarès légendaire dont des premières victoires aux 24 Heures du Mans. L'acquisition de cette montre par un homme éminent du milieu de la course automobile, Peter Scott Russell, contribue à accentuer le prestige de cette montre. Peter Scott Russell, était un pilote de course dans les années 1950 à 1956 et fut notamment vice-président du club anglais de pilotes de course. B.R.D.C. Il est probable que ce dernier ait pu acquérir cette montre du pilote d'Aston Martin, Peter Collins, ou bien d'une association avec Robert Gregory qui aurait été un pilote d'essai pour Aston Martin. ACCORDING TO THE LETTER REPRODUCED BELOW, THE WATCH IN QUESTION WAS COMMISSIONED BY SIR DAVID BROWN TO S. SMITH AND SONS LTD, A ROLEX DEALER. SUCH PROVENANCE GIVES TO THIS ROLEX ITS EXCEPTIONAL CHARACTER AND MAKES IT A UNIQUE PIECE OF COLLECTION. SIR DAVID BROWN (1904-1993) WAS INDEED A RENOWNED BRITISH INDUSTRIAL. AFTER DEVELOPING THE DAVID BROWN LIMITED GROUP, THIS CAR'S ENTHUSIASTIC BOUGHT IN 1947 ASTON MARTIN AND LAGONDA, TWO BRANDS IN TROUBLE THAT HE WILL STRAIGHTEN UP. HE WILL EVEN GIVE TO ASTON MARTIN HIS OWN INITIALS DB AS WELL AS SOME LEGENDARY RECORDS ACHIEVED AT THE FAMOUS AUTOMOBILE RACE, 24 HOURS OF LE MANS. THE ACQUISITION OF THIS WATCH BY A FAMOUS MAN OF THE AUTOMOBILE RACE, PETER SCOTT RUSSELL, HELPS TO INCREASE THE PRESTIGE OF THIS WATCH. PETER SCOTT RUSSELL, WAS INDEED A RACING DRIVER WHO WAS ACTIVE FROM 1950 TO 1956 AND WHO WENT ON TO BE THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE BRITISH RACING DRIVERS CLUB B.R.D.C. IT IS BELIEVED THAT HE MAY HAVE AQUIRED THE WATCH FROM THE ASTON MARTIN DRIVER PETER COLLINS, ALSO FROM AN ASSOCIATION WITH MR ROBERT GREGORY BELIEVED TO BE A TEST DRIVER FOR ASTON MARTIN.
