Commercialisée uniquement jusqu'en 1959, c'est une référence rare dans l'univers des montres de collection. À l'origine développée pour les pilotes de la Pan-American airlines, la GMT-Master est à son lancement une tool-watch révolutionnaire, car elle permet de lire l'heure grâce à un second fuseau horaire matérialisé par une lunette bicolore en bakélite. Particulièrement fragile, ce matériau, qui absorbe mal les chocs, sera remplacé 5 ans plus tard par un insert en métal et laissera la place à la ref. 1675. Launched in 1954, ref. 6542 is a cult watch, as it was the first GMT-Master model produced by Rolex. Sold only until 1959, it is a rare reference in the world of collector's watches. Originally developed for the pilots of Pan-American airlines, the GMT-Master was a revolutionary tool-watch when it was launched, as it allowed the wearer to read the time thanks to a second time zone materialized by a two-tone bakelite bezel. Particularly fragile, this shock-absorbing material was replaced 5 years later by a metal insert, giving way to ref. 1675. Highly sought-after given its short production period, ref. 6542 is a collector's item that can be appreciated with a perfectly preserved bezel. The bezel on this timepiece is barely marked by the ravages of time, making it a particularly attractive piece for connoisseurs in search of a watch as rare as it is legendary. With its case stamped "IV.58" and engraved "6542" on the inside, this watch also has the advantage of a "tropical" patina with hypnotic golden reflections. The case is untouched, beautifully displaying its polished and brushed surfaces as well as its strong beveled lugs. The Bakelite bezel remains in excellent condition and superbly frames the black glossy dial.;It is rare for a watch to be nicknamed after the villain seen wearing one in a film, however the reference 6542 gets its nickname from the only woman in the United States known to be running an organised crime gang: “Pussy Galore” as seen in the 1964 James Bond film “Goldfinger”.;The GMT-Master's history has however less to do with combating international spies and mysterious women than air travel. It began with Pan Am commissioning Rolex to develop a watch for their pilots. Due to the increasing flying distance traveled by pilots in the 1940s and 1950s, the need to keep time in multiple zones had grown in importance. And, the GMT-Master is therefore born with its typical Bakelite bezel and a fourth hand, which allowed pilots to use them to calculate a second time-zone.;The present lot, other than its amazingly well preserved case and bezel features an alluring black lacquer dial with gilt printing whose numerals and hands have aged consistently and present the beholder with a very warm cream hue and the expandable Oyster bracelet from the same period. Furthermore, the original bracelet is fitted with the desirable "big logo" clasp that correctly matches the era of the watch.;Tool watches were meant to be worn and used daily rather than be kept in a safe and worn only on special occasions. In fact, it was common for their owners to wear and polish them frequently. To find one in such original condition is delightful.

With the rise of international travel in the 1940s and 1950s, Rolex initially created the model for Pan Am airlines to track dual time zones. This ingenious design featured an immediately recognizable bakelite bezel with the twenty-four hour luminous numerals painted on the underside, made to glow in any weather condition. Bakelite was Rolex's material of choice, due to its low reflectivity and high readability. The additional luminous 24-hour tipped hand allowed the viewer to immediately track a second time zone.;Given that the GMT-Master was created for specific, work-related purposes, most examples were cased in stainless steel. These watches were worn in the most practical sense and made to withstand the elements. Yet, Rolex also manufactured a very limited number of watches cased in yellow gold, and fitted with a brown bakelite bezel. Due to the immense fragility of these watches, it is incredibly rare to find examples fitted with a bakelite insert.;The original GMT-Master eventually ceased production in 1959.;The present lot is one of the very rare 18K gold examples of the celebrated GMT-Master reference 6542 and stands out by its attractive overall condition.
