Throughout most of their relationship, Rolex allowed the retailer to stamp their dials at their 5th Avenue premises, which would be completed by Tiffany watchmakers, rather than at the Rolex factory in Switzerland. The exact number of Tiffany-dialed Rolexes from this era is unknown, but they are undoubtedly extremely rare and represent some of the most sought-after, desirable, and iconic watches to ever come to market. The reference 1680 was introduced in the 1960s as part of the brand's iconic Submariner collection. The key feature differentiating it from its predecessor references 5513 and 5512 is its date display at 3 o’clock and the introduction of a cyclops to the crystal. Powered by Rolex's self-winding mechanical movement cal. 1570, the 1680 is one of the most iconic designs of the 20th century.

A ce jour, seule la montre ayant été offerte à Jean-Marc Dutriaux est réapparue sur le marché et fut présentée en vente aux enchères deux fois, le 20 mars 2010 à Genève et le 28 juin 2015 à Hong Kong.,Notre exemplaire, est le deuxième à réapparaitre sur le marché.,Surprenante, cette Submariner ref. 1680, est un modèle peu habituel parmi toutes les montres délivrées à la société marseillaise. N'étant pas équipé de valve à hélium pour résister à la pression hyper barre, c'est le modèle le moins adapté aux exigences de la Comex. Ainsi, on estime que parmi les rares Submariner qui auraient été livrées à la Compagnie Maritime d'Expertise par Rolex, la plupart aurait été ensuite offertes par la société à ses partenaires, ses clients ou à ses plongeurs.,Plongeuse culte produite de 1967 à 1979, la réf. 1680 est le premier modèle Submariner avec date à être équipé de la fameuse loupe Cyclope. Notre exemplaire, dit "Red Sub", est particulièrement recherché par les collectionneurs car il n'a été produit que jusqu'en 1975, en plus petite quantité que le modèle classique (Submariner en blanc).,Une lettre signée de la main de Philippe Jeantot, confirmant la vente de cette montre le 12 juillet 1978, sera remise à l'acquéreur.,Philippe Jeantot quitte la Comex vers 1978 après avoir participé à la Mission expérimentale Janus IV, expérience historique réalisée à l'automne 1977 au large des côtes varoises.
